Flore vegan restaurant in Silver Lake
I’ve now had two very tasty visits to Flore so it’s about time I tell you about them. Flore is an “organic vegan eatery” featuring a small vegan deli counter as well as a sit down restaurant. It’s all the rage apparently, considering each time I’ve been there it’s been packed to the gills with hipsters. It sits right in the heart of Silverlake’s hipsterville district and has a sort of San Francisco feel to it. Flore is so hip it hurts. Each time I’ve been there it was bustlingly busy but the vibe is pretty laid back. You might need to wait a little bit for a table, but it flies by quick while you people watch (and dog watch).

Y’all know by now that I’m a whore for faux-Reuben sandwiches, so of course that’s what I ordered on my first visit. Flore’s version is made with tempeh, sauerkraut, rye bread and I don’t remember what the yummy creamy stuff was made of, but I can tell you it rocked. Came served with potato salad. This picture doesn’t do it justice, you’ll just need trust me on this one… it’s good.

And would you say no to vegan blueberry cheesecake? I think not. Neither did I. It was delicious and I especially liked the wholesome yet yummy tasting crust.

For my second visit I had the Tu-No Melt. Fresh six-grain bread, tempeh salad and cashew “cheese”. It was great, though I’ll add that it tastes nothing like a real tuna melt, nor does the Reuben taste anything like a Reuben. Not that I really care what they are called, I just want to eat it them.

Here’s the money shot for you tempeh pervs out there. You know who you are.

I enjoy their reuben, but it’s hard to beat the one at Follow Your Heart. The real winner is that mushroom sandwich, whatever that is called. The best thing I’ve had there so far.

Kevin: Yes, the portobello sandwich… I came very close to getting that one instead of the Tu-no, it sounds really good. I’ll definitely have to get it next time based on your recommendation. And I agree: of all the veggie-Reubens I’ve tried so far, the one at Follow Your Heart is the winner by a landslide. Not that the others aren’t good too, but as you know, that big wheat-meat monster of theirs is in a class of it’s own.

The Little Vegan: Sadly I don’t think it would be as yummy if it wasn’t fresh :(

Awesome post! I ate at Flore last weekend and also had the reuben. I think the creamy stuff was a vegan version of Thousand Island dressing. I’m so excited about your blog!! It’ll help me so much when I come up to LA. BTW, if you come here to San Diego, make sure you try Spread!

BTW, I prefer the RFD reuben. I found Flore’s a little dry.

Charlie: Thanks for stopping by, glad to hear the blog has been helpful. And thanks for the tip on Spread. I’ve heard good things about Pokez too… next time I’m down south I’ll have to give them both a try.

This looks delicious. My favorite reuben ever is from Chicago Diner. If you’re ever in Chicago, you must try it. -From one vegan reuben lover to another.

Haha omg, I’m the perve who really appreciated the up close shot of the tuna melt. That thing is SO FREAKIN AMAZING that I daydream about it. Tuna and cheese are two of my loves, and to be able to have them back in such a tasty and lovely way is AMAZING :-) Another thing I wanted to mention about Flore is that the portions are a really good size. I felt full, but not overly stuffed, ya know?

GummiBarenGirl: Indeed, the portions are a nice size. The Tu-no melt rocks the house! And for what it’s worth, you’re actually the second perv. My perv reference was in relation to someone on another website that was linking to all of my tempeh pictures (I think it may have been a spam blog). Good to know there’s more legit and true tempeh pervs out there like yourself!
