Burning Bonzai brings it on home.
New restaurant! I was being lazy due only partially to my back hurting, so I ordered in take-out from a new place that had left their menu at my door claiming to be “Healthy Asian Cuisine,” called Burning Bonzai. The menu had pretty pictures and sounded appetizing so I figured it was a good time to try them out.

Above is the very tasty Asparagus and Tofu soup. I’m pretty sure the broth was miso based, and it contained thick chunks of the asparagus and tofu as well as some nice bits of carrot that added a natural sweetness. I liked that the soup wasn’t too salty and had an overall mild flavor, which I took up just a notch by adding in a little bit of black pepper and nutritional yeast.
One thing I really like about this place is that they offer half orders, even for delivery, so you don’t end up getting stuck with way more soup or any other dish than you actually want to eat. I got the small soup and it was more than enough for two servings.
I also had their orange flavored tofu, which for some reason I forgot to photograph. Not only was it pretty, it was tasty too. I was pleasantly surprised to find that unlike most orange flavored Asian dishes, the tofu was not battered or fried. It looked like it had maybe been lightly stir-fried in a wok. Good stuff.

I’m always a sucker for Dim Sum, especially the sweet varieties. Burning Bonzai has a nice selection of both these sweet desserty ones as well as the more savory varieties filled with vegetables and/or meat (they are not an exclusively vegetarian restaurant). Here I got the Sweet Sesame Ball, the Steamed Lotus Seed Bun and the Steamed Red Bean Bun. They were all awesome! The sesame bun was all warm and chewy and gelatinous… it had the perfect texture and most yummy flavor. The lotus seed bun was also super good, with a sweet-sticky filling that was surprisingly delightful (the lotus buns I’ve had at other places didn’t have nearly as much filling on the inside), and the red bean bun was good too, with more of a chalky, gritty texture that was at the same time still soft and appetizing.
