I love the Hollywood Farmers market. So many tasty vegan options… the amazing tamales, the Indian food, the salad lady, the fresh juices and so many other awesome options. Most especially though, I love the vegan soul food over at the ‘Taste of Life’ stall.

'Vegan Soul Food

I went full force ahead today and got the sampler plate which lets you pick four items. I got the mac & cheese, kale, BBQ tofu and pot roast. This also came with corn bread. It was all delicious, especially the mac & cheese and pot roast. I was wishing they would have had some sort of yam dish but there was none to be found. I sure wasn’t lacking for food though, you can see what a huge serving this is and I only made my way through about half of it.

This fine food is only one of many reasons to wake your ass up early on a Sunday morning and head on over to one of the best farmers markets in town.

  1. many times i have eaten myself sick at the farmer’s market

  2. funny thing, since they’ve become more, for a lack of a better word, ‘legit’ their portions have gotten smaller. when they first showed up at the HFM the kid working would pile up a container with everything for me. roast, bbq tofu, mac & cheese, kale, black eyed peas & rice, spaghetti (but i usually had them hold the spag) and the corn bread! so much glorious food.

  3. Scott: I was ok with the portion size. It was so big actually that I was somewhat embarrassed to be walking around with it while I looked for a spot to sit down… I felt like such a piggy having all this food for myself! I’ll admit however that I was somewhat let down that the piece of cornbread was so small in comparison to the rest of what they gave me. One can never have enough cornbread.

Have you ever eaten at Soul Vegetarian? I’ll admit I liked the food there better, but this stuff from Taste of Life was still pretty darn good. If Soul Veg ever opens a place at the Farmers Market though I’ll be all over it.

  4. They are actually the same people and use some of the same recipes. I love this stuff, anyways…your blog is one of my favorites, keep it up.

  5. teenage glutster: Really? I asked the guy from Taste of Life when I was last at the farmers market if they were the same and he told me no, but that there was a relation between them. Perhaps he didn’t understand my question? Either way, they both rule!

Oh, and thanks for stopping by and reading my blog!

  6. A TASTE OF LIFE, the Vegan Soul booth at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market, has opened a restaurant in Los Feliz on the corner of Fountain & Vermont. It’s the food we love — now, every day of the week! Yippee!. The address is 4718 Fountain Avenue (balcony). They also do take-out. The number is 323-669-0784. Blessings!

  7. I checked out Taste of Life last Saturday for the first time. First thing I’ll say is they don’t skimp on portions, but if I’m paying $12 at a cart, I expect a good amount of food.

Liked the mac and cheese, although it was a little dry.

Greens were good, but in my greens-eating lifetime I’ve noticed two distinct ways to prepare greens: one is to lightly saute or blanch the plants so they still have some green color and some crunch, and the other way seems to be to boil them to death (in a tasty broth). Taste of Life takes the latter route, leaving the greens so cooked they appeared brownish. They still tasted good, but were cooked beyond belief.

Tofu was firm with a nice outer crust and was covered in sweet, tangy sauce which I really enjoyed. I’m not usually a fan of chunks of tofu, but I was happy with these.

I also got blackeyed peas, but I had so much food I didn’t get to them…and then the food ended up sitting in the car and I had to throw it out.

I think this place is promising. They also had pot roast and lasagne, neither of which I tried. I’d like to check out the restaurant before comparing it to other soul food spots in LA.

But for now, Veggie Soul is tops on my soul food list.

  8. Eric: Thanks for the great review… try their pot roast next time, it will make you a fan for life!
