Just got a bummer of an email from a reader who passed along this news:
Hello, I just went to my favorite vegi joint in LA, Papillon in El Segundo, and found to my horror that they were informed by their building owner that they must close on Monday April 27.
They will be open Sunday (today April 26) from 1-8 pm for goodbye food. I don’t know many other vegetarians and thought maybe you would and could pass along the word. What a loss.

What a loss indeed, especially since I’d not yet had a chance to ever eat there. Papillon is/was a restaurant that serves Filipino food, not all vegetarian but vegan friendly and with an entire large menu of all vegetarian & vegan items. Alas… another one bites the dust.
If you’re anywhere near El Segundo tomorrow (today- I’m writing this at 4:30 in the morning) try and get this special food while you still can. I’d highly suggest calling ahead to see what’s up and to make sure they are still open.

I’ve been crazy busy with work and life so I haven’t had much time to reply to your comments or to write about food (this shall be rectified as soon as possible). There’s been so much going on all at once! How about we skip the chit chat and get to the interesting stuff?

Why a sad vegan you ask?
The big news being passed around in hushed, somber voices amongst L.A.’s veg*n foodies is the premature closing of most everyone’s favorite restaurant, Doomie’s. It was with heavy hearts that we read Doomie’s bulletin on Myspace which broke our comfort-food loving spirits:
We are closed!
Doomie’s is now CLOSED for business. We would like to think of it more as a hiatus as we are looking for a new place to relocate and planning on reopening, hopefully sometime by the end of the year. Until then, however, keep posted as we will give out details and any updates we may have.We’re working on having a whole lot more goodies and surprises on our reopening!

Also, if you have any parties or events that you would like catered, we’re still available for catering! If you never got a chance to try Doomie’s, for now my friends… you are shit out of luck and worse for the wear. See my original review of Doomie’s for a taste of what you missed out on. We’re holding out hope that Doomie’s really will resurface, and in the meantime there’s talk of planning an event for the sole purpose of having Doomie cater the hell out of it. More news will be posted here should this actually manifest.
After that, I need some good news, how about you? Ok, here’s some: Quarrygirl has found the “Best Vegan Pizza Yet!”, and it’s located right here in downtown Los Angeles! Imagine that, one door closes, another opens. Read all about QG’s adventures at Purgatory Pizza, then drive on over and bring me a slice, would ya?

These people are serious about their pizza folks, so if you want to know what’s what on the tasty melty vegan cheese front, you’ll enjoying reading about the lengths this couple have gone to in order to determine which faux-cheese is best.

Today’s news you can use:
We were all sad to learn recently that one of our favorite places to eat The Vegan Spot had closed. The good news is that it’s sister location up the street, Flore, has taken it over. It’s now called Flore Cafe and has been refashioned into a Vegan/Vegetarian Coffee House.
The menu features some of the same soups, salads and sandwiches as Flore, along with organic juices, coffees & teas, as well as breakfast served all day. Breakfast all day? Awesome! It does come served with a little side of bummer though, because for whatever reason they’ve decided to no longer be 100% vegan and are now serving eggs. This begs the question: why? Are hardboiled eggs really in such high demand in Silver Lake? Anyhow, it’s cool to see they are back in some form or another, despite their stinky eggs. If you’ve been there let us know how you liked it in the comments.
Even more good news about restaurants we love: Shojin, the best (and only) vegetarian Japanese restaurant in town has just announced that they are 1. now open everyday (Mondays too!), 2. have just updated and added many new items to their menu, and 3. will be hosting a special 7 course dinner for Christmas, on the evenings of December 24 & 25th. Have you heard the one about the farting gorillas? No, really! These gorillas at a zoo in London love Brussels sprouts, so the zoo staff let them eat their fill as a special treat.
If you’ve ever had your way with a bunch of brussels sprouts, you’ll know that they can make you quite gassy. Apparently the gorillas were farting up such a stink storm that the zoo had to issue “an apology after guests at the zoo expressed their horror at the potent smell that started emanating from the gorillas’ enclosure.”
Ironic that they’re horrified at some stinky farts, yet they aren’t horrified at the fact that these animals are captives put on display for entertainment purposes. I love that these gorillas got to enjoy their favorite food and stink up the whole place at the same time!
Those gorillas know what’s what too, Brussels sprouts have become one of my favorite vegetables in recent months. If you hate them it’s only because someone who did them up all wrong fed them to you and gave you the wrong impression. When done right, they can be spectacular. I’ve been getting some good feedback on my quick and easy Roasted Brussels Sprouts Recipe and I’ve been looking around for more tasty (yet simple enough for me to cook) ideas on what to do with these misunderstood little beauties.
This recipe for Brussels Sprouts with Orange and Chili sounds delicious. I also found this recipe for Chipotle Chili With Sweet Potatoes And Brussels Sprouts and my mind was somewhat blown by the possibilities.

FOOD FIGHT is a new documentary that takes a look at how American agricultural policy and food culture developed in the 20th century, and how the California food movement rebelled against big agribusiness to launch the local organic food movement. It features Alice Waters (Chez Panisse), Wolfgang Puck, Michael Pollan and other big names involved with food.
As part of the AFI Film Festival, FOOD FIGHT is premiering at the Mann Chinese 6 on Hollywood Blvd. at 3:15 pm on Saturday, November 8 (that’s this coming weekend). The screening is FREE and open to the public.
Did you catch that last part? You can see this movie for free, all you gotta do is just show up!
Here is a short synopsis of the film:
When we walk into a supermarket, we assume that we have the widest possible choice of healthy foods. But in fact, over the course of the 20th century, our food system was co-opted by corporate forces whose interests do not lie in providing the public with fresh, healthy, sustainably-produced food.
Fortunately for America, an alternative emerged from the counter-culture of California in the late 1960s and early 1970s, where a group of political anti-corporate protesters–led by Alice Waters of Chez Panisse–voiced their dissent by creating a food chain outside of the conventional system. The unintended result was the birth of a vital local-sustainable-organic food movement which has brought back taste and variety to our tables. FOOD FIGHT is a fascinating look at how American agricultural policy and food culture developed in the 20th century, and how the California food movement has created a counter-revolution against big agribusiness.
I have not yet seen the film and am planning to catch the free screening on Saturday if I can make it. I’m very interested to see if any of the various aspects of animal rights and welfare are addressed in this movie, if at all. While I am interested in and grateful for a lot of the work that these people have done in the name of advancing clean, organic and healthy food, I am often disappointed by the fact that these movements often ignore the core issues regarding the animals that are at the center of it all. I do not subscribe to the idea of “happy meat & dairy” (raising animals “humanely” only to slaughter them for food) and I truly believe that if people want to have clean and healthful food, the best way to do so would be to redefine the concept of food to one that does not include animals. I do not believe in killing them with kindness, I believe in not killing them at all. That said, I’m looking forward to seeing what this film has to say about all of these issues and more.
